Dale Kavanagh - Playing her own Music!

What is one piece of advice you would give to composers who are new to writing for the guitar?

One piece of advice that I would give to new composers is that it is better to sketch your ideas on paper, before popping them into your music program, like there good old days. Music programs are very important to learn and use, however, when writing directly into the computer, it is easy to get swayed by the mechanics of the program. I write more freely and lyrically without the computer.

How does your relationship change with your compositions when you are playing them yourself versus when you are not?

I have played most of my compositions, whether they be solo, duo or ensemble. Of course, when I play my own composition, I usually grow closer and closer to what I am looking for. There have been times when I want to change things, but the changes are pretty minimal. I like to take the weaknesses of what I found in one piece, and try and do a better job on the following piece.

What are you most looking forward to in this years Twisted Spruce Symposium?

I am looking forward to exchanging ideas and to meeting, if possible, other musicians who like to compose for guitar. There is so much to learn. I am hoping to give and to learn.
